For more information on Psychotherapy itself, what it is and how it works click HERE.

Psychotherapy is similar to counselling, however it is usually accepted as more proactive. One of the most famous types is psychodynamic psychoanalysis, pioneered by Freud. Many more types such as transactional analysis, behavioural psychotherapy and spiritual psychotherapy exist. Other therapies are related offshoots such as Neuro linguistic Programming (NLP) and Hypnotherapy.

As in counselling, psychotherapy works as a "talk" therapy, allowing the client to get in touch with underlying information, behaviours, causes and reasons. By bringing things into the conscious mind from the subconscious the client gains a measure of control over the problems. Further proactive techniques then tackle the problems further making changes for the better.

Psychotherapy is usually very safe, but PLEASE make sure you go to a properly qualified therapist. He/she should be not only properly qualified and registered, but also able to use other related techniques as a back-up. Look for NVQ Accreditation (Advice & Guidance Modules or relevant Training & Development Units) or other SQA/ QCA approved awards / awarding bodies.

There are a number of types of Psychotherapy available, again for a complete description see HERE

Are all Psychotherapists equally qualified?

Unfortunately the industry is self-regulating! Some therapists are hardly qualified at all! Some are qualified, but only in a narrow area, e.g. just in person-centred Psychotherapy and no other modalities, this makes them inflexible and narrow in context.

Please note that at the time of writing (2007) work is in progress to complete the first stage towards statutory regulation of all counsellors, psychotherapists and psychologists. This first stage is the writing of a new set of National Occupational Standards for "Psychological therapies". Although we support this in principle, there is a concern that this development may lead to a restriction on therapists combining other therapies with these "psychological therapies". If it transpires that we are unable to continue in our flexible and holistic approach to combined use of therapies, we will cease using the titles of "psychotherapist," and "counsellor", and instead use the terms "Life Coach" and "holistic therapist", refering to the former as "using counselling and psychotherapy skills". We will of course continue to adhere to appropriate National Occupational Standards in this event, including NOS Hypnotherapy and NOS Healing.

For a more comprehensive guide see HERE. In short though, look for:
Codes of Conduct and Ethics.
Qualifications or registrations of non-independent industry bodies (e.g. Royal Societies)
NVQ Qualifications. Or other QCA / NQF listed accreditations such as ASET awards. Level should be at least level 3, preferably 4.
