Phobias and Fear

Irrational Fears are often called phobias. These can be about virtually anything and are very personal to the individual. They occur when trauma, perception or understanding cause the subconscious to mistakenly misjudge the level of risk or danger, creating a "danger" or "flight and fight" response".

Phobias and fear can be helped with Hypnotherapy, Counselling, NLP, CBT and Psychotherapy

Hypnotherapy, Counselling, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, psychotherapy and NLP are all effective in combination in treating phobia and fear cases.

What are Phobias?

Phobias are fears of animals, places, activities, things, anything really. The thing they have in common is they are apparently illogical or irrational. People often assume therefore that they are being "daft" because of their phobia. This is not true. All phobias have a logical element, hidden somewhere in the subconscious.  All phobias respond well to the same systematic combination of assistance.

How does the treatment work?

This can Work in a number of ways:

  • Hypnotherapy can be used in a Clinical Hypnosis model to reduce fear responses
  • Psychotherapy and or Hypnotherapy can tackle psychosomatic reasons for being afraid
  • Hypnotherapy visualisation and reprogramming can assist directly by changing the way you feel about the place / thing / other phobia.
  • Motivational counselling can tip the psychological balance, that compared benefits and costs of the fear. Many of these are often subconscious. Once addressed the person feels they have the strength to overcome any residual fear.
  • People under stress suffer more likelihood of fear response, therefore relaxation and stress management are of great assistance.
  • NLP can be used to control responses to situations.
  • CBT Cognitive Behavioural Therapy can be used to change perception (way you think about things) and behaviour.
  • SIT Stress Innoculation Therapy works to increase what you can cope with.

What is the usual result?

The combination of all of these means that you can:

  • Learn to cope with fear better, feel the fear but do it anyway.
  • Learn to feel different and positive emotions instead of fear. And these will gradually over-write the fear feelings.
  • Become generally calmer and stronger.
  • Address the reasons why you were afraid deep down anyway.

Getting at the underlying cause

Please note, most people have some deeper reasons for fear and phobia. Although phobias are by definition apparently irrational, there is virtually always a deeper meaning in the subconscious. To prevent a repeat of the fear, or a new symptom like it, it is essential to deal with that deeper cause. Therapists who just give symptomatic relief like to believe that by disrupting the phobia they can cure it. Unfortunately this is not usually valid and is the equivalent of giving pain killers to a patient without addressing the cause of the pain. We take care to make you feel better, AND deal with the holistic reasons why.

"Rapid Phobia Cures" and "EFT Emotional Freedom Technique"

There are a lot of "wonder cures" being pedaled at the moment. These include short treatments using Hypnosis, NLP and EFT. These only work for those people who only have fairly minor phobias that are not yet ingrained. They work by disrupting the phobia before it can become deeply ingrained in  cognition and behaviour. TV programmes have frequently show cased these "cures" and time after time have shown subjects to have brief respite, followed by relapse. It is valid to use such "brief surface" methods in minor cases, but where the client has a deep rooted phobia, common sense should tell the enquirer that a serious issues will not respond to a trivial answer! EFT in particular is highly contraversial since it uses a hackneyed combination of self-shiatsu (tapping) and distractional technique (behavioural cues). It is not recommended for serious cases.
