What is Life
Coaching?
Life coaching is the provision of pro-active therapy
techniques, personal development training and change techniques. It is
a natural extension of the way therapy has changed over the years.
Life coaching is very much results orientated: the
client wants demonstrated CHANGE, rather than understanding alone.
Obviously a degree of understanding is very useful since it enables the
client to choose what to change!
Life coaching is particularly effective in that although it may take
time to complete the process (as in conventional therapy processes), it
is well planned and the client should experience positive changes and
results right from early on. It is therefore a planned process with
positive feedback and change along the way, rather than a long drawn
out way for results at "the end of the tunnel".
Indeed Life Coaching works well in conjunction with more traditonal
therapy processes, so that the client can feel results, while working
towards deep traditional understanding in the long term.
Remember however that no therapy, life coaching included
is not a "magic pill" or process. It is very efficient, but effort,
commitment and change are very definitely required. The "Coach" points
the direction for you to take and helps you to find the tools and
processes you need. No Life Coach can solve things for you. In fact it
is worth remembering that you are the world's leading expert on
yourself, the Life Coach helps you to access the right information!
What sorts of
things can Life Coaching help with?
Self-confidence, Self-esteem, productivity, enjoying
life, improving relationships, planning for the future, choosing
direction, balancing aspects of your life, being honest to yourself,
understanding who you are, choosing optimum states, using emotion,
understanding negativity, triggering positive states. The list could go
on for pages! Whether an individual, group or organisation, looking at
the model of what you have now and the model of where you need to get
to, the coach can begin helping you make the change. Obstacles, false
beliefs, false targets, other peoples pressures etc can all be defused
and the really important targets for you discovered.
Is Life Coaching New?
NO! Back in the early 90's in the UK
there were plenty of
"Teaching Therapists" and plenty of industry trainers. The new aspect
is the realisation that the two are so clearly interrelated. The Terms
Life
coaching and Life coach are primarily borrowed by our US
cousins!
What therapies are included?
Training skills, Psychotherapy
skills, Counseling Skills, NLP
training skills, Coaching Skills, Hypnotherapy Skills, Feng Shui
Skills, Supervisory
Skills, additional resource / therapy skills.
How many sessions?
Whether corporate or personal or
group, this is individually
assessed. Sometimes just a couple of coaching sessions will create the
needed
momentum. In other cases there will be a need for regular monthly
meetings to
monitor progress and ensure change. Ideally the client engages in a
series of
sessions to initiate the change process, and then commits to a long
term
strategy of support. Where people truly engage and commit, the process
and
sessions pay for themselves in terms of finances, life quality and
happiness!
Apart from the increased financial well-being anyway, can you put a
price on happiness?

What qualifications
should the Life Coach have?
The Coach should be qualified in anything they are providing from the
above. It is not enough to have a certificate diploma in life coaching
for a series of weekend sessions over a few months! BEWARE many life
coaching are very poorly qualified. Choose a coach who has a therapy or
business background (depend whether you want personal or corporate
support) and is well qualified in it. The coach should then have proper
qualification in Training & Coaching itself.
Therefore:
Qualified in Training & Coaching to National Standards (not
independent diploma)
e.g. Education Dept recognised: PGCE, NVQ, ASET.
Therapy qualifications in psychotherapy, hypnotherapy and anything else
offered.
Registration with recognisable
body with enforced code of conduct & Ethics.
Naturally Paul Morgan-Ayres is
qualified as a therapist and as a Coach and Trainer (NVQ Unit awards)
and abides by the code of conduct and ethics of the Royal Society for
the Promotion of Health. His colleague Denise is qualified in the
therapies she provides, as a resource available to coaching clients if
required. Now that ASET accreditation has become available in Life
Coaching, Paul is set to complete units within 18 months on top of his
existing accreditation.
Paul has also written a
professional advanced training course in CBT,
another in Anger management, and one in stress managment, which are
currently awaiting accreditation. Paul's Advanced Life Coaching course
is already accredited as an ASET level 4 award.
