Eating Disorders. Assisting with Hypnotherapy, Counselling and CBT

There are many variations of Eating Disorder, the most well known being Bulimia and Anorexia. Others include the abuse of drugs and laxatives.

Something that all eating disorders have in common is that they are a symptom of a deeper emotional problem. Examples of such problems include:

  • Self Harm tendencies

  • Clinical Depression

  • Low Self Esteem

  • History of Abuse

  • Desire for Control

  • Bullying or other violence

As you might already realise, there are many variations on the above too. There are for example many forms of abuse that a person can suffer.

Generally the person suffering an eating disorder will desire more control in their lives, will have a low self opinion and will have a reason for emotional pain or disruption.

The eating disorder itself provides what we call "secondary gain" this is something that although negative, has some aspect that we get a kind of benefit from. Examples include:

  • Feelings of control

  • Permission to loose control

  • Self punishment

  • Punishment of others

  • Physical hormonal changes that can be addictive such as sugar and endorphin levels

  • Sometimes attention

  • Sometimes a private secret

As you can see, many of the factors seems to contradict. Sometimes the sufferer only gets the one, sometimes both at different times.

Should I seek medical attention?

YES. Whoever is suffering from the eating disorder must have some form of medical supervision. This is because there can be related medical conditions. Also some medications such as anti-depressants can help some sufferers. Feedback on usefulness varies greatly. Some people are convinced that antidepressants made a huge positive difference, others think they were a waste of time. You should always seek a medical opinion in order to have the choice, and to have a general health check.

It is a great help to any complementary health therapist to know that their client is having regular check ups from a medical doctor.

Who is effected by eating disorders?

It used to be believed that eating disorders were only experienced by young female teenagers through to early adult life. Now however we know that almost anyone can experience them depending on the situation. Some other examples include:

  • Sports people wanting to look perfect for their sport
  • Young people of both genders wanting to look perfect
  • Models wanting to improve career choices
  • Older people whose metabolisms are slowing down
  • People who have been left by their partners
  • Victims of abuse who have poor self image
  • Teenagers of both genders who suffered obesity as a younger child

These are only examples, frankly almost anyone can suffer given the right set of circumstances. My oldest client with eating disorders to date was in her 70's.

How can you treat eating disorders?

A classic mistake is to immediately tackle the eating itself. Trying to force a person to eat normally is counter productive. The only short term dietary changes have to be very small, and designed to add nutrition while still accommodating the eating disorder.  In other words accepting that in the short term the eating disorder will continue, and working around it.

The main priority with eating disorders is to address the emotional issues of the client. These are the reasons why the eating disorder has been created in the first place. Essentially the eating disorder is a defence mechanism. If you attack it head on, you tend to make it stronger. If however you take away it's reason for existing, you enable a recovery.

We strongly believe all clients with eating disorders are different individuals, and we avoid labeling and assumption as to cause and case type.
