We adhere to the National
Occupational Standards for Counselling
Counselling is usually very
safe, but PLEASE make sure you
go to a properly qualified therapist. He/she should be not only
properly
qualified and registered, but also able to use other related techniques
as a
back-up.
There are a number of types of Counselling available,
again for a complete description see HERE.
Typical issues counselling can assist HERE
Is Counselling the same as Analysis?
No. Counselling is the generic term covering a number
of forms of therapy. Analysis or psychoanalysis is one of the methods
used.. Therefore Analysis is merely one type of Counselling or
psychotherapy.
What about Self-Analysis?
Self-Analysis is the process of inducing a state of
Analysis (self-knowledge) yourself.
Are all Counsellors equally qualified?
Unfortunately the industry is self-regulating! Some
therapists are hardly qualified at all! Some make wild
claims! Some societies such as the "popular" BACP (British
Association of Counselling & Psychotherapy) have mainly
unaccredited therapists! The size of the registering body is no
guarantee of quality as the BACP proved when they allegedly allowed
Bernard Manning to join as a joke (on them). Check the accreditation
process of any organisation that is referred to. Organisations like the
NACHP, ISPC and CPS all require their members (ALL their members) to be
accredited to a stated level that is reflected in their designation.
"Fellow" level is usually the highest professional level of
accreditation available.
For a more comprehensive guide see HERE. In
short though, look for:
Codes of Conduct and Ethics.
Qualifications or registrations of non-independent industry bodies
(e.g. Royal Societies)
NVQ Qualifications.
Beware of:
Therapists trained only by distance learning (although in part is OK
and some courses are well accredited e.g. Open University).
Entertainers dabbling in therapy
Foreign Degrees that are not ethically described!
Please note that at the time of writing (2007) work is
in progress to complete the first stage towards statutory regulation of
all counsellors, psychotherapists and psychologists. This first stage
is the writing of a new set of National Occupational Standards for
"Psychological therapies". Although we support this in principle, there
is a concern that this development may lead to a restriction on
therapists combining other therapies with these "psychological
therapies". If it transpires that we are unable to continue in our
flexible and holistic approach to combined use of therapies, we will
cease using the titles of "psychotherapist," and "counsellor", and
instead use the terms "Life Coach" and "holistic therapist", refering
to the former as "using counselling and psychotherapy skills". We will
of course continue to adhere to appropriate National Occupational
Standards in this event, including NOS Hypnotherapy and NOS Healing.
