Counselling in Edinburgh

The following is a guide to many of the issues that counselling can assist.
All medical issues should be presented to and diagnosed by a medical doctor. No claim is made to "cure" medical conditions. Complementary health therapies including medicine should not be seen as a replacement for medical supervision and treatment.

What kind of issues does counselling usually help?

The following is not an exhaustive list, and indeed counselling can assist a very wide range of social, behavioural, psychosomatic and emotional issues. This is increased by combining counselling with related techniques, such as hypnotherapy, psychotherapy, life coaching. We have practices or colleagues providing support in a range of locations including Edinburgh, Glasgow, Carlisle, Aberdeen, Stirling and other bases in England and Wales.

Relationship issues:

Relationships, Bereavement, grief, social skills, loneliness, homesickness, self esteem, confidence, cultural transition, separation, divorce, adoption, individuation from parents.

Emotional Issues:

Anxiety, stress, panic attacks, phobias, obsessions, compulsions, depression, loss, bereavement, meaning, purpose.

Survival issues:

Victim support for crime, disaster, indecency, rape, sexual and racial harassment.  Unwanted pregnancy, termination counselling and reactions to termination.  Sexual identity and lifestyle, VD, sexual  functioning. Also social services invention related issues.

Counselling is usually very safe, but PLEASE make sure you go to a properly qualified therapist. He/she should be not only properly qualified and registered, but also able to use other related techniques as a back-up. Look for Nationally accredited standards. CLICK HERE

Please note that at the time of writing (2007) work is in progress to complete the first stage towards statutory regulation of all counsellors, psychotherapists and psychologists. This first stage is the writing of a new set of National Occupational Standards for "Psychological therapies". Although we support this in principle, there is a concern that this development may lead to a restriction on therapists combining other therapies with these "psychological therapies". If it transpires that we are unable to continue in our flexible and holistic approach to combined use of therapies, we will cease using the titles of "psychotherapist," and "counsellor", and instead use the terms "Life Coach" and "holistic therapist", refering to the former as "using counselling and psychotherapy skills". We will of course continue to adhere to appropriate National Occupational Standards in this event, including NOS Hypnotherapy and NOS Healing.
