Training To Survive. Personal Development for Today's World

Training, Supervision, Assessment, Coaching and Complementary therapy in the UK

Introduction

Diplomas, most degrees and many other certificate courses may provide useful knowledge for therapists.  Most training in the industry is not accredited and is not to nationally recognised standards. This is not the fault of practitioners in the field.

There are some accredited awards available but most are independent. Religious (faith & pastoral) and independent diplomas do provide valuable information and training but should be underpinned with nationally accredited awards.

Enquiries should seek therapists with Nationally Accredited Standards ,  Awards and Qualifications.  These truly provide indications of competence and standards.  Look for Level 3, or preferably Level 4 Nationally Accredited Awards in a relevant area or context! Some awards are provider specific but are accredited by a nationally approved awarding body such as ASET.

Also look for registration with a body you can easily identify as appropriate, such as a Royal Society in the area of medicine or health. Currently many organisations are merging and changing as the industry struggles with self regulation and we acknowledge the difficulty for the general public of understanding these changes.

As you read through the biography below you will note a combination of faith, independent and most importantly nationally accredited awards
(summarized after each section).

If you want broad based experienced consider the independent awards. If you want pastoral assistance then consider the faith based awards.  Indeed accredited awards are still to be developed for some therapies.

Remember: the nationally accredited awards (or awards from accredited providers)  provide real evidence of competence to recognised standards.

Biography and Qualifications

Clients should seek Nationally Accredited awards to Nationally Accredited Standards, see here. THESE are the awards that truly matter, and I am committed to adding to these on an ongoing basis. The award itself, or the provider should be properly accredited.

I have been in professional practice since 1993, with voluntary non-professional experience predating this by another five years.

In my combined counselling, stress & anger management, hypnotherapy and psychotherapy initial training (which led to NVQ accreditation with specific units D32 & C25 Trainer and Assessor Mini-Award). I was assessed on over 200 supervised cases over 2 years with a required minimum success rate of 80%. I was further assessed in practice, by demonstration, by peer group observation, by testimonial, by written and audio presentation and observed assessment to Training and Development Lead Body Standards in order to attain my NVQ Level IV Training and Development Award in this industrial context. This included Coaching and Training units. I subsequently became an NVQ Assessor for the industry awards.

I am further committed to ongoing improvement and accreditation with ASET accredited awards.

I am also involved in writing professional training courses for an ASET accredited college and assisting in compliance with nationally recognised standards.

ASET Qualifications are approved by QCA (England), ACCAC (Wales) and CCEA (Northern Ireland) and by the Secretary of State for Learning and Skills and are part of the National Qualifications Framework (NQF).

ASET also provides National Awards (designed by ASET) and accredits Awards (designed by Centres).

(ASET is now also SQA approved in Scotland - 2007)

Pastoral and Spiritual issues

This is in ADDITION to my qualifications as a secular counsellor and psychotherapist. My initial analysis training included parapsychology training.

The awards in this section are not particularly relevant unless your issues are faith related.

I am duty bound to point out that the Professorship, MA, PhD and other degrees I have been awarded are only relevant to pastoral work since they are in pastoral counselling and pastoral therapy topics. These are therefore NOT qualifications in mainstream therapy and no claim is made that they are. The PhD is an earned religious qualification under US Law and the Professorship involves an unpaid support role in therapy related theology based subjects. I hold a Professorship of the UK Division (Chair) of the Seminary. The degrees that I have been awarded required substantial submissions of professional standard work.
Please note that these degrees are earned degrees and not purchased or honorary degrees. They required substantial work that has taken over 15 years to complete. The work has also gained substantial recognition in different formats gaining a clinical award of excellence in practical therapeutic use, and external accreditation in training use, both in the UK. We are NOT medical doctors. Awards include:

-MA,  Social Work Ministry (awarded 2000)
-PhD,  Pastoral Counselling (awarded 2001)
-D.Phil,  Pastoral Leadership (awarded 2007)
-D.Phil,  Life Coaching (awarded 2007).

-Professor of Religious Studies, Psychotherapy and  Counseling U.K. Division, Interfaith Seminary

Denise has also completed an earned degree with the Seminary and holds a D.Phil in Pastoral Healing. The work she submitted has also be adapted for training programmes and has formed part of programmes available now in the UK with external accreditation.

We therefore openly declare these awards and degrees to be religious and pastoral in nature but clearly state that these are properly earned awards, received legally and properly, and the work for which has received accreditation and acclaim in other formats due to its quality and professional nature. They are thus valid and meaningful awards to recognised international standards.

  • As well as having completed additional modality training as part of my ongoing professional development (spiritual counselling, spiritual psychotherapy, Theo therapy) I have worked extensively in a multi-faith context.

  • I have added to my core diploma in hypnosis and parapsychology with a commitment to multi-faith counselling and healing.

  • I am an ordained multi-faith minister with a number of multi-faith groups, and have an  MA, two D.Phil's and a  Doctorate (PhD) from the Interfaith Seminary of the Church of Seven Planes. These  required real and very substantial submissions and assessment of work that in another format has received a clinical award of excellence and external training accreditation here in the UK. Indeed the work submitted took over 15 years to complete for these four awards.  Indeed I later won a clinical award of excellence for one of the personal development programmes written as just one part of my PhD evidence submission. In the USA they are recognised as earned Divinity awards. The work submitted represented many years of academic and vocational work and research.

  • My Professorship required the submission of further evidence (work dating back to 1993) and my commitment to write, examine and assess ongoing course material and student submissions. I am also a registered Conversations with God resource. It involved and required actual support work as well as being awarded on merit.

  • Please note that being ordained and having the Rev or Revd title is not a qualification. Being ordained is a commitment and acknowledgment of faith that is very relevant in faith related therapy work. It should not however be considered a "qualification" apart from in the sense of spiritual commitment. It is a job title, not a qualification.

  • We adhere to the National Occupational Standards for Spiritual Healing.

There are no nationally accredited standards for multi faith pastoral counselling at present, although therapists should have awards for each method used in a secular sense, e.g. counselling and psychotherapy (see above). However Social work and Mental health courses provide a broad foundation including specific accredited training on respecting individual cultural and spiritual identities.

Related Nationally accredited standards:

Earned:
Social Work Competence in Practice ASET Level 4.
Mental Health & Social Work ASET Level 4
Level 3 ASET grief and Bereavement.
ASET Level 3 Psychotherapy  including module on Spirituality.
ASET 4 Hypnotherapy accredited Counselling Module
ASET Level 3 Life Skills Coaching
ASET Level 4 Integrated Therapeutic Counselling

Religious and honorary awards.
The following information is repeated in order to ensure complete clarity.

I (Paul) rarely use my PhD , Professorship or ministerial titles. This is because they are only relevant to pastoral work. They are occasionally mentioned because of my pastoral and faith healing work and multi-faith counselling work, in which areas they are of great relevance. I am duty bound to point out that my Professorship, D.Phils, MA  and PhD are only relevant to pastoral work since they are in pastoral counselling and healing issues. These are therefore NOT qualifications in mainstream therapy and no claim is made that they are.

National standards, Codes of practice

  • I adhere to the professional codes of conduct and ethics of the Royal Society for the Promotion of Health ( of which I am a Fellow).
  • I am a Fellow of the Society for Holistic Coaches and Therapists. www.societytherapistscoaches.com

  • I adhere to the standards of practice laid down in the TDLB standards of the Level IV NVQ in Training and Development.
  • I adhere to the standards required by the Society of Holistic Therapists and Coaches (SHTC)
  • I also adhere to the National Occupational Standards for Hypnotherapy laid down in the UK.
  • I also adhere to the National Occupational Standards for Counselling laid down in the UK.

  • There are MANY more areas in which we adhere to National Occupational Standards! And the number of areas is growing as we ensure compliance. Click HERE for more.
  • In the specific area of pastoral work I also adhere to the multi-faith commitment of multi faith ministries to respect all faiths equally. Faith is only discussed in context if appropriate. No imposition of any faith is ever made whatsoever. I am an ordained minister with the Church of Seven Planes (offsite)
  • I maintain professional registrations, and am an Advisory Board member of the National UK Therapists Register.
  • I am a listed assessor for both NVQ Training and Development awards and NVQ advice and Guidance awards.
  • I am committed to various ASET nationally accredited courses that have recently become available.
  • Regulation  is planned as a spin off from the pending NOS Psychological Therapies. We can not tell at this stage if this will be good or bad for the industry. In principle it should enable a simpler bench mark for the general public. In practice it may prevent holistic and eclectic work, making it hard to integrate different therapies into one package. If this side effect does occur, it is our intention to cease using the terms "counsellor" and "psychotherapist", instead focusing on "holistic therapist" and "life coach" using "counselling and psychotherapy skills" and adhering to the NOS Healing instead.

Supervision and NVQ Assessment

  •  I am also an accredited NVQ assessor for the Advice and Guidance awards, and training and development awards for a leading training company.
  • I am additionally an accredited hypnotherapy trainer in my own right with the Professional Board of Hypnotherapy.

Back up and support

I have a network of professionals to provide me with assistance, supervision, advice and support in practice. I also have a number of professionals with specialties to advise on deeper issues relating to the many therapies provided should I need to consult colleagues. I am committed to ongoing professional development and updates. Indeed I am currently keeping two courses running at any one time, at least one of which is ASET accredited.
