Anger Management in Edinburgh
(Anger management programmes similar in all locations)

What is Anger Management?

Anger Management is different from counselling in that there is a far more proactive element. It is more in nature a combination of life coaching and psychotherapy. A large degree of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy is used.

There are a number of elements in anger management:

  • Underlying reason for tension / stress level.

  • Situations and patterns causing increased / noticeable anger levels.

  • Triggers / persons / situations that cause "boil over" scenarios.

All of these elements have to be address for long term changes to be made effectively. It is no good for example, changing the fact that traffic jams stress someone out, if they are carrying a huge amount of unspoken tension under the surface. They would merely find another "boil over" point.

Conversely trigger points do need new programmed behaviours, simply because even if you address underlying stress and are "chilled out", longstanding triggers could still cause tension or anger out of programmed habit.

Clearly an overall approach is needed.  Clients learn new approaches in life, gain new balance in their lives, approach what were stressful situations differently, and gain new reactions to triggers.

How does this happen?

Underlying reasons are addressed with psychotherapy and life coaching principles. Also relaxation therapy may be useful in many cases. The award winning "Stress Pack" is often used in conjunction with face to face session, which are 1:1 with clients.

Positive visualisation, psychotherapy and NLP are usually used to change states and emotional feelings in those "danger" situations where previously stress or anger feelings might have increased.

Reactions to triggers are often changed through role play, NLP, Anger Management, visualisation or psychotherapy techniques.
