What is Neuro Linguistic Programming?
NLP used to be considered merely a behavioural change
tool, with most practitioners using it for rapid change behavioural
techniques. However this school of thought was shown to be
negative, since insufficient thought was given to the ecology of the
client. Rapid change techniques were being used without a proper study
of the reasons for the client experiencing problems in the first place.
Thus change was manifested, but often the WRONG change, in the WRONG
direction for the WRONG reasons. some practitioners have maintained
this one dimensional approach to NLP. Many, including Professor Paul
Morgan-Ayres, have embraced more holistic NLP approaches. This means
that the NLP provision is within the context of overall support,
counselling, healing and life coaching change. Much better not too rush
the assistance in the short term, providing more time with the client,
but the changes and assistance having long term benefit, rather than
the "quick-fix" short term change provided in the past.
Holistic Neuro Linguistic Programming is the provision
of pro-active therapy techniques, personal development training and
change techniques. It is a natural extension of the way therapy has
changed over the years.
Neuro Linguistic Programming is very much results
orientated: the client wants demonstrated CHANGE, rather than
understanding alone. Obviously a degree of understanding is very useful
since it enables the client to choose what to change!
Holistic Neuro Linguistic Programming is particularly effective in that
although it may take time to complete the process (as in conventional
therapy processes), it is well planned and the client should experience
positive changes and results right from early on. It is therefore a
planned process with positive feedback and change along the way, rather
than a long drawn out way for results at "the end of the tunnel".
Indeed Neuro Linguistic Programming works well in conjunction with more
traditional therapy processes, so that the client can feel results,
while working towards deep traditional understanding in the long term.
Remember however that no therapy, Neuro Linguistic
Programming included is not a "magic pill" or process. It is very
efficient, but effort, commitment and change are very definitely
required. The "Coach" points the direction for you to take and helps
you to find the tools and processes you need. No NLP coach can solve
things for you. In fact it is worth remembering that you are the
world's leading expert on yourself, the coach helps you to access the
right information! The coach helps you to see things from a different
angle, including finding options and development goals for you to
implement or follow.
What sorts of things can Neuro Linguistic
Programming help with?
Self-confidence, Self-esteem, productivity, enjoying
life, improving relationships, planning for the future, choosing
direction, balancing aspects of your life, being honest to yourself,
understanding who you are, choosing optimum states, using emotion,
understanding negativity, triggering positive states, overcoming
dependency on addictions and behaviours. The list could go on for
pages! Whether an individual, group or organisation, looking at the
model of what you have now and the model of where you need to get to,
the coach can begin helping you make the change. Obstacles, false
beliefs, false targets, other peoples pressures etc can all be defused
and the really important targets for you discovered.
Is Neuro Linguistic
Programming New?
NO! NLP evolved under the
development of Bandler and Grinder, two brilliant programmers, from a
range of existing therapies. It was originally designed to be a
modelling system, identifying the best methods out there and make them
repeatable. Therefore NLP is not a "new" thing, but a way in which
existing methods have been more efficiently modelled.

What therapies are
included?
Group therapy, psychotherapy
skills and above all Hypnotherapy
skills were incorporated in a programming structure. Now Holistic NLP
or Human
Design Works combine this within a context of psychotherapy and
counselling or
life coaching.
How many sessions?
Whether corporate or personal or
group, this is individually
assessed. Sometimes just a couple of coaching sessions will create the
needed
momentum. In other cases there will be a need for regular monthly
meetings to
monitor progress and ensure change. Ideally the client engages in a
series of
sessions to initiate the change process, and then commits to a long
term
strategy of support. Where people truly engage and commit, the process
and
sessions pay for themselves in terms of finances, life quality and
happiness!
Apart from the increased financial well-being anyway, can you put a
price on happiness?
What qualifications
should the NLP have?
The Coach should be qualified in anything they are providing from the
above. It is not enough to have a certificate diploma in Neuro
Linguistic Programming for a series of weekend sessions over a few
months! BEWARE many coaches are very poorly qualified. Choose a coach
who has a therapy or business background (depend whether you want
personal or corporate support) and is well qualified in it. The coach
should then have proper qualification in Training & Coaching
itself.
Ideally you need to find a NLP
coach who has an extensive and well qualified track record as a
professional therapist, especially counselling, psychotherapy and other
behavioural change processes such as hypnotherapy. On top of this the
coach should have appropriate and recognised qualifications in the
provision of training or coaching.
Therefore:
Qualified in Training & Coaching to National Standards (not
independent diploma)
e.g. Education Dept recognised: PGCE, NVQ, ASET.
Therapy qualifications in psychotherapy, hypnotherapy and anything else
offered.
Registration with recognisable
body with enforced code of conduct & Ethics.
Naturally Paul Morgan-Ayres is
qualified as a therapist and as a Coach and Trainer (NVQ Unit awards)
and abides by the code of conduct and ethics of the Royal Society for
the Promotion of Health. Paul's NVQ level IV in Training &
Development contained evidence of Neuro Linguistic Programming methods,
NLP, training provision and practice. The NVQ also contained C25
Coaching Unit, C21 training unit and the overall award was a Level IV
Training & Development award. Paul is comprehensively
registered and insured. Before training as a therapist, Paul completed
an IIT degree and specialised in Change & Systems Management
and Human Resource Management. Paul completed extensive and supervised
Hypnotherapy, Analysis and Counselling diploma training at the
commencement of his career, which contained NLP technique and
application.
Now that ASET awards (nationally
accredited awarding body) are available in Hypnotherapy and NLP, Paul
has now completed ASET Level 3 NLP, and Level 4 Hypnotherapy is
underway.
Since NLP is a form of
psychotherapy and closely related to hypnotherapy, the National
Occupational Standards for Hypnotherapy are adhered to where
appropriate.
Paul is also a course author for
an ASET accredited college, and has written practitioner training
courses that have been ASET accredited, including ASET Level 5
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, ASET Level 4 Life Coaching, ASET Level 4
Anger Management Coaching, ASET Level 4 Stress Management Coaching and
ASET Level 4 Holistic Healing.
His colleague Denise is qualified
in the therapies she provides, as a resource available to coaching
clients if required.
